Researcher/Writer

As a Researcher/Writer at Family History Films, you will be responsible for conducting in-depth research into clients' family histories, genealogical backgrounds, and personal stories. You will report to Project Managers, developing compelling and accurate documentary content based on your research findings. This research will also involve engaging directly with clients, conducting interviews, and using a range of genealogical and historical research tools to help to shape the narrative of each project. You will use your proven writing abilities to develop factual research into documentary scripts for editors and voice over artists. You will also work on book projects, developing your research into well-written, captivating chapters to be included in coffee-table style ancestry books.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independent Research: Conduct thorough research on ancestry, genealogies, and biographical histories, using primary and secondary sources including historical records and genealogical databases. Source local genealogy experts to assist with on the ground research.

  • Script Writing: Write clear, factual scripts for documentaries, turning research findings into engaging narratives.

  • Client Communication: Collaborate with clients to understand their personal family histories and ensure research aligns with their goals for the project.

  • Interviewing: Conduct research interviews with clients, family members, and other relevant individuals to gather important details and insights. Interview clients and present research on camera to generate content for the final film.

  • Story Development: Seek out, develop and refine storylines, uncovering new leads and angles for film and book projects.

  • Travel for Research & Shoots: Travel as required for research purposes or to participate in shoots. Candidates should be travel ready (with a valid passport) and be willing to travel both domestically and internationally. International travel will include but is not limited to North America. A full, clean driver’s license is required and applicants without both a passport and a license will not be considered.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Education Level: Bachelors Degree or higher required. Degrees in English, History or similar are preferred.

  • Confident Research Skills: Proven experience in independent research, particularly in areas relating to genealogy, history and biographical stories.

  • Writing Ability: Strong writing skills, with experience in factual scriptwriting, nonfiction features, or historical writing.

  • Interviewing Skills: Comfortable and confident in conducting research interviews, with the ability to engage clients and uncover compelling family stories.

  • Story Development: Proactive in identifying and developing new leads, refining research into a compelling narrative.

  • Time Management: Able to work efficiently under pressure, working across multiple projects and meeting strict deadlines, while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with North American History & Culture: A strong understanding of North American history and culture would be beneficial.

  • Documentary Research: Experience with documentary research and development, particularly in the realm of ancestry and biographical storytelling, is a plus.

  • Research Report Writing: Previous experience writing research reports, especially genealogical or historical, is highly preferred.
